What’s On in Powys, Wales This March

As we move closer to spring, the rich, rolling green landscapes and glorious mountains of Powys are calling to be explored. If you’re thinking of visiting us at Cwm Hafren Holiday Park, the local area is steeped in agriculture, Welsh history, and arts.

March in Powys, Mid Wales

There are a few upcoming dates in March, whether you’re a local or tourist, that can be celebrated.

  • St David’s Day Celebrations on the 1st March will see various local community events, parades, and concerts held throughout Powys to celebrate Wales’s patron saint.
  • This year, Mother’s Day is taking place on 15th March, where there will be lots of local events and family celebrations in Mid Wales.
  • A King’s Legacy: 1879 Remembered is a commemorative Heritage Day to honour the shared history of the Zulu nation and Welsh soldiers who fought during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. It blends South African culture with Welsh heritage through music, dance, food and drink. The main celebration is hosted by the Royal Welsh Museum on 28th March.

 

Festivals, Fairs, Markets and Crafts

It doesn’t get much more Welsh than wholesome, community events, and this year, Mid Wales will be hosting its fair share of spring festivals and fairs:

 

Crickhowell Walking Festival, 7th – 15th March

The Crickhowell Walking Festival offers nine days of guided walks through the stunning countryside around Crickhowell, the Brecon Beacons, and Hay-on-Wye. When spring arrives, there’s no better way to enjoy the season than by immersing yourself in the beautiful landscapes of Mid Wales.

 

Elan Valley Dark Sky Festival, 27th – 28th March

Elan Valley Dark Sky Festival is an unforgettable weekend of star-studded activities and performances in one of the top stargazing locations in the world. From planetarium shows to wildlife walks, concerts and stargazing, there is a programme of cosmic events for everyone.

 

Community Crafts, Every Tuesday

Crafty Cafe at Y Lanfa (Welshpool Library and Museum) offers community artists a craft session with a cuppa every week.

 

Mother’s Day Treat, 15th March

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea at Llangoed Hall is a Laura Ashley-inspired tea, including a glass of sparkling, a selection of delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones served with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of handcrafted cakes and pastries.

Powys also offers a range of music, comedy, and performing arts festivals, perfect for a day trip or evening out in spring, including:

 

Family-Friendly Activities

There are always activities going on in Mid Wales to get your wellies muddy. Powis Castle and Garden is a National Trust medieval fortress located in Welshpool, and a popular spot especially in spring when the flowers are in bloom, and the sun might be out! Roughly a 40-minute drive from Welshpool is Pistyll Rhaeadr, Wales’s tallest waterfall, definitely a sight to see if you’re exploring Powys’ great outdoors this spring!

  • On the 1st March, the Talyllyn Railway is celebrating St David’s Day with its vintage trains. It is a wonderful experience and opportunity to learn about the rich Welsh history that still runs through Mid Wales.
  • Calling all runners! On the 22nd March, local runners will be running through beautiful Mid Wales in the Welshpool 10km! Whether you’re running the race or cheering from the sidelines, it’s a lovely group event to get involved in.

Hay-on-Wye Hay Festival of Literature and Arts

Taking place in May, the Hay Festival is one of the world’s largest literary festivals that brings together the top writers, thinkers, musicians and comedians. It is a weekend of debating and creating, all in the historic town of Hay-on-Wye, only half an hour from Powys.

The Royal Welsh Show

The annual Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd attracts thousands of visitors every year. Held in sunny July, the Royal Welsh Show event is known for its ‘best in show’ livestock competitions, wild entertainment showcases, impressive food hall, and rural craft and trade shows.

 

The National Eisteddfod of Wales

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the largest and oldest annual celebration of Welsh culture. Held in August, is set to be another amazing week celebrating the Welsh language, music, literature and art.

 

The Green Man Festival

The Green Man Festival is an annual music, science, and arts festival held in mid-August in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, Powys. It is known for its indie and folk music lineup, with comedy, literature, film and wellness areas attracting 25,000 people!
