Here are some of our top dog friendly walks within easy reach from the Park:
Only a 5 minute drive away, Deri Woods consists of a network of sloping gravel paths that lead down to a picnic area adjacent to the River Banwy. It’s the perfect location for sheltering beneath tree canopies on those hot summers days and your pooch can even have a cool off in the River.
Created from a gravel pit quarried for the creation of the Welshpool bypass, Llyn Coed-y-Dinas is home to a varierty of wildlife such as kingfishers, otters, lapwings and great crested grebes. In the winter you may even catch sight of a Bittern in the reeds. All paths at the reserve are wheelchair accessible. Dogs are very welcome but will need to be kept on a lead here.
With various trails, The Dingle area explores the undulating countryside surrounding Welshpool. Why not follow the route to Y Golfa, a hill with stunning views toward the Breidden Hills? Alternatively, explore the internationally acclaimed Dingle Gardens, for a small entry fee, with a stream-fed lake and array of plants and flowers to inspire your next garden project. Pooches also welcome on leads.
For those looking for a longer adventure, you can follow the perimiter of Lake Vyrnwy, apporox. 11 miles. Or if you’re a serious hiker, follow one of the many miles of paths that take you into the hills and mountains. A firm favourite for families and dog walkers is the Waterfall Trail, this circular route follows mostly flat terrain. With breathtaking views and scenery regardless of which route you take this is one not to miss.
Glyndŵr’s Way is an 135 mile long National Trail starting in Knighton and ending in Welshpool. If you’re looking for a peaceful meander through open moorland and rolling fields then this one is for you. Whether you fancy tackling the whole walk or just a section closer to Welshpool, you’re guaranteed to enjoy scenic views, making it a firm favourite amongst dog owners.
The Montgomery Canal provides a peaceful setting for a leisurely waterside walk for both you and your dog, offering several miles of flat, easy walking. Embrace nature and wildlife as parts of the canal are Sites of Special Scientifc Interest and behold the UK’s largest populations of grass wrack pondweed and the rare aquatic floating water plantain. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of an otter!
