One highlight to look out for is the Davies gates – beautiful ornate Baroque gates dating back to 1712! Dogs are welcome around the 480 acre estate of woodland, meadow and grassland with links to Offa’s Dyke path.

Erddig

Erddig Hall is a much loved 17th-century country house, garden and estate that sits above the Clywedog river. Consisting of a restored formal 18th-century Grade I listed walled garden, Victorian parterre, central canal water feature and fishpond makes this impressive garden worth a visit at any time of the year. Your canine companions are welcome in the 1,200 acre estate of stunning meadows, veteran trees and woodland. The house itself was saved from ruin in the 1970’s and is a treasure trove of fine furniture, textiles and wallpapers.

Powis Castle & Garden

This medieval castle was built in the 13th Century, furnished with intricate tapestries, furniture and world-class paintings. Beneath the castle lies the Italianate Terraces which are considered the finest surviving example of a 17th century terraced garden in Britain. Beyond this the manicured gardens are immaculately kept leading up to the peaceful wooded ridge opposite the castle- the perfect location to take in the view of the whole castle. The Clive Museum, within the old Billiard Room, houses the largest private collection of this type in the UK of South & East Asian artefacts. The surrounding Park and woodlands are home to herds of fallow and red deer- if you visit on the right day it’s a spectacular sight to behold. You can also grab a spot of lunch from the Courtyard Café whilst admiring the peacocks meandering around.

Carding Mill Valley & the Long Mynd

These wildlife-rich heather-covered hills are the perfect location for walking, cycling and horse riding. Many even enjoy a wild swim in the reservoir where you can appreciate panoramic views. Alternatively, if you’re not feeling energetic you can drive to the top of the hills and submerse yourself in the breath-taking views. Whilst there embark on the Lightspout Waterfall walk- following the stream to the four-metre natural water feature Victorian visitors called a “miniature Niagara”.
